The Object Image Gallery presents it’s
second exhibit in the yearlong series City Images. The show features
the work of Michael Calabrese and Jo Pendola. “Both artists”,
according to gallery Director Bob Weiss, “stress not the scenic and
well documented landmarks of our city but instead the quiet icons of
city life.”
Michael Calabrese passed away in 1991 and left a large body of work
that centered on his love and careful observation of New York City.
He was a co-founder of the Manhattan Graphics Center and studied at
the New York Studio School with Philip Guston and George McNeil. The
exhibited work includes watercolors, etchings and monotypes that
demonstrate his mastery of each technique. Mr. Calabrese wandered
the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn
presenting everyday views in an eye opening way.
Brooklyn artist Jo Pendola also interprets the city through her oil
paintings. Her work is very personal and introspective. Her
paintings of street corners and rooftops mostly devoid of people
show the city without the noise, dirt and action. What is left is an
often-haunting view of the common place.
