Water Towers have long been landmarks of
the New York landscape. The Object Image Gallery presents an exhibit
of paintings, drawings and prints that celebrate these “Sentinels”
of our rooftops. The work of thirteen artists gives a variety of
perspectives on these familiar objects. Karen Whitman’s linocuts
portray them as almost living things, Dylan Williams uses a strong
sense of light and dark and a variety of views in his strong
paintings. In the work of Weiss, Calabrese, Leibstone, Melvin and
Scott Williams the water towers seem almost an after thought to
their urban landscapes but is often a strong unifying element.
Jacqueline Rada‚s paintings use subtle colors to give the towers a
mysterious and epic quality. The small but dynamic drawings of
Italian artist Laura Fantini demonstrate the power that these
“Sentinels” hold over artists. The large and detailed drawings of
Warren Beishir document parts of Brooklyn that are rapidly changing.
Alexis Mahon’s drawing on wood and Andy Hoogenboom’s etching are
unique approaches to the subject. “The Sentinels Show”, according to
gallery director Bob Weiss, “will help us all look at these familiar
friends in a new way.”
